Mackenzie Jones, M.P.A.
Director of Operations, People, and Systems

Born and raised in Maryland, Mackenzie (she/her/hers) leads the operations at the organization as the Director of People, Systems, and Operations. In this role she works to deliver a best-in-class employee experience, oversee the financial health of the organization, and optimize systems for efficiency. As a previous Program Manager on our team, she loves the opportunity to support the strategy, growth, and systems of the organization, allowing our team to reach more community members and make serious strides in advancing health equity in DC and beyond. For three years as a Program Manager, Mackenzie built the Grassroots volunteer base and reinvented leadership development and internship opportunities for student-athletes, along with building and maintaining lasting school and community relationships.

Prior to rejoining our team in 2019, Mackenzie was an educator in Louisiana where she taught elementary and middle school. In 2017, she was awarded middle school Teacher of the Year. During this time she was also a Community Organizer and Civic Engagement Coordinator. She is passionate about early childhood literacy and believes that comprehensive and equitable education means going beyond “core subjects” and providing youth access to ALL of the tools needed to live a healthy, happy, fulfilled life. Mackenzie strives to create and contribute to equitable and inclusive spaces in the workplace; spaces where challenging norms and the status quo is valued, not shunned.

Mackenzie holds a B.A. in International Affairs from The George Washington University and a Masters of Public Administration(MPA) from Louisiana State University.

Mac N Cheese got her nickname WAY back in 2011 when she joined Grassroots as a collegiate volunteer. She spent her days on the lacrosse field hearing “Mac! Mac!” and decided that turning her sport nickname into one of the most beloved foods made perfect sense. These days, Mac N Cheese spends most of her free time hanging out with her dog Beignet and enjoying her daily yoga practice! In addition, she appreciates getting outdoors, coaching and spectating all sports, and staying up to date on the latest shows to binge. She also spends time attending community meetings and connecting with people about issues important to her – educational equity, racial justice, and LGBTQ+ issues, to name a few. Mac N Cheese is a passionate people person and one of the most extraverted people we know – WHO doesn’t love some Mac N Cheese?!
