This month, we are excited to introduce Lavar Curley on the TGP blog. Lavar is a DC resident who initially learned about our work when he was searching for a charity to support as part of the Marine Corps Marathon Charity Partners program. Lavar has run multiple races to support us, and he has gone out of his way to get to know our work by attending events, following our programs, and building relationships with our staff. Every year, he shares our work with his friends and asks for them to support our cause, too. We sat down with Lavar ahead of his 41st birthday to ask him a few questions.
Our Question: “You are an experienced runner with some amazing results over the years, and you always inspire our team. What made you decide that you wanted to run for a cause, and what made you particularly interested in running for The Grassroot Project?”
His Answer: “When I learned about The Grassroot Project, I was quickly interested in the mission and initiative. Also, it was a local charity, so I could work closely with the charity and run for the great cause in my favorite marathon (The Marine Corps Marathon). It was a chance for me to give back to the community that has done so much for my post-collegiate career. “
Our Question: “What is your favorite moment in being a fundraiser for The Grassroot Project?”
“I love the pre-race pasta dinners. Getting to know the runners and supporters always provides the best motivation. And of course, meeting the students. Every year it feels like a nice homecoming and to me that is the highlight and putting in all the summer miles.”
Our Question: “At TGP, COVID has reminded us how important public health, disease prevention, and wellness promotion are. Has COVID-19 affected the way you think about public health? If so, in what ways? “
“I lost several friends and relatives to COVID-19. I also ended up catching COVID, which made running down the block very difficult. Fortunately, I recovered quickly, but rebuilding has been a challenge. I’m determined to continue working with TGP and to use running as my platform.”
